Security researcher, John Dickson (@johnbdickson), has worn some very funny t-shirts at trade shows like RSA and Black Hat. At Black Hat 2022, Dickson was wearing a shirt that said, “Security Insultant,” or rather the security consultant you hire that tells you you’re doing everything wrong.
My personal favorite is a shirt that said, “Does Not Have Budget Approval,” which is often what security salespeople are looking for. They just want to find the person at your company that will purchase their product. It’s a pretty direct way of saying, “I’m looking at you as a mark.” And for security professionals who are looking for vendors to be partners, an opening line like that does not sit well.
Instead, said Dickson, ask people “How” they’re handling certain issues. After a few questions like that, you’ll quickly be able to determine whether or not that they have budget approval.
